Flowering shrubs deliver more satisfaction to the gardener than any other plant. You plant it once and it will last a lifetime in that spot if you plant carefully and care for it after planting. Flowering shrubs are easy to grow, low maintenance, little fertilizer, little pruning, and little or no spray to control pests. They produce more blooms than you can use. Cutting blooms is an easy way to prune. Flowering shrubs are available in a variety of shapes, heights, foliage colors, textures, and forms, flower colors and forms, fruit shapes and colors. You can plant shrubs to ensure blooms nearly every month of the year. Wherever you live, there are several flowering shrubs from which to choose to fit your need and desire. They vary in their need for sun and moisture. Some thrive in shade and others in full sun. Some thrive under drought conditions and others require a saturated moisture zone. While others thrive in conditions in-between those extremes. Many attract butterflies and bees. Some are deer resistant.
Some produce fruit that attracts birds throughout the year. An additional benefit of shrubs in the garden: they give it a lightness that evergreens do not provide. They change the focal interest as the season changes. So, choose to add shrubs to your garden and landscaping spaces. Begin this summer to reap the benefits of their versatility.

Evergreens continue as the choice of plants to anchor the landscape bed to the home. They provide varying shades of green throughout the winter season and dense protection for birds. Evergreens come in many shapes, sizes, and colors from the dark green of the Taxus ‘Hicksii’ Yew and its bright red berries in the fall to the yellow pendulous foliage of the Chamaecyparis ‘Gold Mop’ (False Cypress). Consider the shiny, dark evergreen leaves and red fall berries of the Ilex Castle Wall or the Ilex Berry Heavy, both Hollies. Then there is the Native North American Thuja (Arborvitaes) with their flat, fan-like, thick foliage in colors ranging from the deep green of the ‘Nigra Dark Green’, a good winter color, to the golden yellow of the ‘Yellow Holmstrup’. The Picea (Spruce) has dense foliage of bright green needles. Choose evergreens to enhance your landscape and gardens.

Our selection of Prairie Plants/Native Plants will create extended beauty through the seasons for years to come. These are perennial plants that return season after season and produce flowers and seed heads that attract and feed a variety of wildlife. Your Moisture Zone will determine which plants to choose because Native Plant Zones differ and determine what native plants will thrive in those zones. We offer prairie plants for three zones: Upland Dry, Upland Moist, and Saturated. Those zones are defined as:
Upland Dry: Plants in this zone tend to have very deep root systems to draw moisture from the soil in the driest conditions. Once established, these plants can withstand very long periods of drought. These species typically prefer well-drained soils.
Upland Moist: Similar to species found in the Upland dry zone, these species tend to have intensive root systems and favor well-drained soils but can tolerate slightly moist soils.
Saturated: Species found in the saturated zone prefer to have “wet feet” and can tolerate some hydric soils conditions. These species can also survive short periods of flooding in the spring. Choose from plants or choose small seed packets if you wish to plant a larger area.
